To The Powder River Basin Community: We want to know what brought you to our area. AVA is building a Memory fence to document the stories of the peoples of this region.
WHO? You or your family
WHAT? A symbol of how you or your family got here
WHEN? Did you/they arrive
WHERE? Did you/they come from
WHY? Did you/they come
We have already recieved some stories and symbols.
WHO? Dara Corkery
WHAT IS YOUR SYMBOL? Sage Brush
WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?
Isabell, South Dakota
WHEN? 1976
WHY? I stayed in Gillette because of the people and the energy that they generate in this community. I fell in love with not only the community, but the people of Gillette and Wyoming. Another added bonus, I have always loved the prairie.
Another story we have recieved:
WHO? Lawrence Kemper
WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?
Denver, Colorado
WHAT IS YOUR SYMBOL? A Reverser (Key used to operate a locomotive)
WHEN? 1980
WHY? To work for BNSF. More work, steady pay, but long hours. 26 years later I'm still here running coal trains.
WHO? Patty Myers
WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?
Buffalo, Wyoming
WHAT IS YOUR SYMBOL? A Library Book
WHEN? 2004
WHY? To be a librarian. I have childhood memories of the dirt road main street in Gillette.
Send us your story. The memory fence will be made out of wrought iron and will be composed of lines from area maps. The fence posts will each have a finial of a native songbird. When thinking about your story and the symbol, keep in mind that the symbols will be cast in bronze and then welded to the memory fence, so make sure your item is something that can be cast.
