April Art Lab: The Art of Bonsai with Gerald Gardner
FREE FOR AVA MEMBERS!
Saturday, April 12 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.

AVA’s Art Lab series is designed to give our artist community the opportunity to grow their creative practice through monthly deep-dives led by local experts. Held during Open Studio Saturdays, these sessions are free for AVA members and focus on a new technique, perspective or business practice each month — giving you valuable tools to elevate your artistic journey.

For April, we’re going green — literally! Join bonsai expert Gerald Gardner for a hands-on introduction to the timeless and meditative art of bonsai.

What is bonsai?
Bonsai is a traditional Japanese art form that blends horticulture and design to create miniature trees that mimic the shape and style of their full-sized counterparts. It’s not just gardening — it’s a living sculpture that requires patience, vision, and care.
What you’ll learn:
Gerald will walk you through the foundations of bonsai, including:
  • The history and artistic principles of bonsai
  • How to choose and care for a bonsai tree
  • Trimming, shaping, and maintenance techniques
  • How to see and shape your tree as a work of art

Whether you’re a painter, potter, or just curious about new forms of creative expression, this session offers a peaceful and inspiring way to reconnect with nature while learning from a local expert.
Bring your curiosity — and leave with a whole new way of seeing the world through art.
