Layered Growth by David Cowdrey
I repurpose and reimagine ideas and subject matter which brings new life and life experiences to the prints I create. Layering image over image draws me in as there is always something different to see. In the same way we continue to make discoveries in the relationships we have with each other. I embrace the mistakes in my work and appreciate the lessons they teach. I enjoy the variations in each print. I want my artwork to inspire hope, optimism and humor. These are the ways I combat the difficulties in life.
I like to have a connection with the images I place on paper. I grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado, a town surrounded by mountains and vast expanses of wilderness. Part of me has always tried to navigate the city and the country. The prints allow me to celebrate nature, even when I am surrounded by an urban setting. I investigate the openness of nature and the peaceful serenity that it provides. I incorporate florals grown in my garden. Their presence in my work means they can be enjoyed long after the flowers have wilted. I play with bright colors and proportions and give importance to everyday objects. In this way, I rebel and pay my respects to Postmodern art.
Lately I have been combining industrial/urban images with floral patterns. The floral prints become an embodiment of the peace received from the natural world. This combination of the hard, rough industrial visuals with the delicate floral visuals symbolizes our relationship with nature. I want these prints to show we can harmonize with the natural world. I also incorporate the transitions happening in my life. Through this, I can document a moment in time, and process life and its various changes.
I feel like I have found a hidden path, and I am following it, exploring new places. The prints find me where I am and then take me in new directions.
