Fire & Light: Janna Carter MFA
Creativity has always been an integral part of my life. As a child I was drawing during the sermon at church, in the classroom while my teacher read aloud, and en route to family vacations. At lowa State University I explored drawing, painting, photography, calligraphy, metalsmithing, stained glass, and the underlying principles of art and design. I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. After a successful career as a designer and art director, earning an MFA in Integrated Design, and teaching design at a collegiate level, I became disabled and unable to work in my profession. So I reignited my passion for art and photography, and I took my very first ceramics class at the age of 55. As a studio artist, I am now able to better manage my limitations by creating at my own pace.
In 2023 I traveled to Italy for a ceramics masterclass, and in 2024 I studied one-on-one with maestro Mara Funghi in Tuscany. I was inspired by the immense history of the area, and my travels also provided amazing subject matter for both ceramics and photography. Later that same year I completed a masterclass in porcelain here in the States. I will return to Italy in August to embark on a new ceramics journey: mastering crystalline glazes under the tutelage of José Mariscal.
I have received recognition and awards – in both photography and ceramic art – in national and international juried exhibitions in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Oregon, Washington DC, and Wyoming.
I bring my very best to every piece I create. My work emanates inspiration, creativity, mastery, and a love for beautiful objects. I’m also available for commissions!
