Standing Soldier Junior stands in his uncle’s home in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
With $10,000 bail posted, Junior was freshly released from jail.
The charge, homicide.
“God d***,” I said softly while I looked Junior over.
The young man remained silent.
I pressed on respectfully, and with genuine concern and interest. “Mind if I ask what the hell happened?” Care carried in my voice.
Junior opened some, “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Then, in the small kitchen, Standing Soldier walked toward me. We were only inches from one another. Beside me on the counter were aluminum cans of mango tea. His large hand grasped one, and offered it to me.
I accepted and thanked the man.
