Soren was sitting upon the ground with his legs crisscrossed, alone and drinking a bottle of wine in a rough Denver alley, reading a Michael Connelly novel he had read twice before.
I learned Soren’s father was an Army Green Beret that served two tours in Vietnam. His father bestowed upon his son the name Soren after Soren Kierkegaard, a Danish theologian, poet, philosopher, and a man largely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher.
As a combat veteran and father myself, and as Soren and my Doberman, Genghis, shared a moment, I wondered how the children of combat vets suffer as an indirect result of their father’s combat experiences.
