Joan Sowada
Joan Sowada has lived in Gillette Wyoming for the last forty years and has used fabric as her medium for even longer, finding it perfect for expressing nurturing ideas. She creates contemporary textile art in both abstract conceptual and representational styles. She has been exploring the idea of seasons, in three interpretations. There are political seasons, seasons of life, and seasonal weather of Wyoming.
Joan’s artwork is often in response to the times we live in. For twenty years Sowada’s work has been shown in national and international shows across the country. Her artwork has been a changing fixture of the stairwell at Gillette’s City Hall for the last seven years. You can see more of her artwork, read her blog, and see a current listing of exhibitions at her web site www. joansowada.com.
I work in abstract conceptual and figurative styles and often show people in relationships with each other and the
outdoors. I am interested in showing life's stages and the nature of how people relate to living things, times of the
year, and location. Figures and colors are often ambiguous, allowing the viewer to have their own interpretation. I
want the art to be in some ways specific and at the same time universal. Fabric is nurturing and has many
diverse voices that are perfect for expressing the ideas of my artwork. The medium is an important vehicle for the
message.
